What are dental implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent way to replace missing teeth. Compared to other methods of replacing missing teeth dental implants are a popular and long lasting solution. Living with missing teeth can really affect a persons health, smile and self confidence. After all your teeth allow you to eat and smile properly. They also support your face and help you look younger. Traditional methods for replacing teeth such as partials dentures and bridge can replace the teeth , but they affect the surrounding teeth and need frequent follow up and care and replacement. Because implants fit like natural teeth and don’t affect the surrounding teeth they are often the best options.
How do implants work?
After Implant Placement & Restoration
Dental implants are a permanent and appealing solution to replace missing or extracted teeth. They are better than other alternatives like bridges because no additional teeth need to be altered to place the new tooth.
The entire implant process is performed over the course of a few months. The first part of the process is to install the implant itself by placing a manmade root into the area of the missing tooth.
The implant must be allowed about 3-6 months to heal, and during this time the jaw bone will form around the implant in a process called osseointegration. We can help you look your best by making temporary dental prosthesis during this time that will allow you to look your best.
After the implant has healed it is time to place the visible tooth portion of the implant. This area is comprised of an abutment (base of the new tooth), and the crown(the visible part of the tooth.) Your smile will look just like it used to and you can smile and chew with confidence.
What happens if teeth are removed and implants are not placed?
Teeth help to support the bones of the face. When they are removed the facial bones continually shrink and over time lead to the sunken in and over closed smile that we associate with aging. Dentures and bridges can replace the teeth but cannot stop the bone loss associated with tooth loss and the appliances will need to be replaced often. Replacing the teeth with implants will help stimulate the bone and allow you to look your best and chew comfortably.
